Supersized Redditch Colour Palette celebrated by artist and partners

People across the borough of Redditch can now experience the new Redditch Colour Palette public artwork inside the Kingfisher Shopping Centre.

The supersized installation, which at 3m x 3m is the largest of all the colour palettes across the country and abroad, takes pride of place above the atrium walk space at the Market Place entrance to the Kingfisher Shopping Centre.

The Colours of Redditch project is combining colour with local people’s experiences of Redditch. The new Redditch Colour Palette is the result of 100s of suggestions by local people, and the final inspirations for the six colour panels were voted for by the public.

The Borough’s dedicated creative and cultural programme, Reimagine Redditch, has partnered with The Colour Palette Company, Redditch BID and the Kingfisher Shopping Centre, to develop the project with local people, and to fund the new installation in the Kingfisher Shopping Centre.

Similar projects have been developed with the same national artist, Stacey Barnfield, of the Colour Palette Company, for different places and organisations around the world and across the country: Stacey has worked all over the UK. The Redditch Colour Palette is the latest palette he has designed.

The people involved in the creation of the town’s new, unique artwork, came together at a launch celebration event on Tuesday evening.

In addition to the key funding and creative partners (pictured above), other partners and people joined the celebration, including representatives for some of the key inspirations for the colour palette: Royal Enfield motorbike enthusiast Mervin Panting, who generously loaned three of his bikes for the launch; Ben Clawson-Chan, Managing Director at Rubicon Leisure, which runs Arrow Valley Visitor Centre; and Redditch Palace Theatre Manager, Tim Mackrill.The event included creative workshops for a small group of community members, who had helped with selecting the final inspirations for the colours, who produced their own unique mosaics using tiles in the six colours from the Redditch palette.

Richard Bromhall, Programme Director for Reimagine Redditch, said: “Colour is such a foundational thing in our lives, it’s so familiar to everyone, so the opportunity to do something with colour about a place is just so exciting. And the thing that’s really interesting about this project is that it is shaped by local people. It takes on their character.

“Redditch residents told us they wanted to ‘brighten up’ the borough. This is a colour palette about Redditch and by Redditch people. We can’t wait to see what they do with their Redditch Colour Palette.”

Worcestershire-based artist Stacey Barnfield, from The Colour Palette Company, said: “The Colour Palette artworks are all about celebrating local; the areas we grew up in, the people who inspire us, the places we love and the buildings we cherish. It’s wonderful that the Redditch Colour Palette is being shaped by people who live, work and play here. My thanks go out to everyone who submitted a suggestion.”

Adrian Field, General Manager for the Kingfisher Shopping Centre, and Chair of Redditch BID said: “Belfast and Birmingham, Liverpool and Lincolnshire: each of these places (and many more) have embarked upon a campaign to find a unique colour palette, designed just for them, in response to ideas from the people who live there. Redditch now joins this group of British places in marking out its identity and what matters to local people about their place through colour. We are thrilled to be supporting this exciting campaign and can’t wait to see and share the results.”

Muj Rahman, BID Manager, said: “The Colour Palette is all about brightening up Redditch’s high streets and communities and gives everybody a chance to see Redditch anew through fresh eyes. It’s led by local people and will be a colour palette by them and for them. We are delighted to support this initiative and to see the change it will bring to Redditch!”
